Do Smartphones really cause kitchen and gas station fire outbreaks?

A lot of misconceptions about smartphones and gas fire outbreaks,

What's your point of view?

Let’s start:
Smartphones mostly emit radio waves same as a lot of devices and the frequency they emit and the duration of your call is very small for it to cause damage if it would.

How Is it safe to use your cell phone at filling stations?

You see signs at gas stations that say no cell phones.
Why? Because smartphone batteries can explode and thats is dangerously especially when you’re pumping gas.

The real cause is static electricity that you accumulate along the way.

Static electricity is the buildup of electric charges on a material. An electrical charge can build up through frictional contact between two materials that are both insulators, like rubbing your hair against a balloon or your rubber-soled feet against a carpet as we do when small. One object will lose electrons and have a positive charge, while the other will gain electrons and have a negative charge. The charges are desperate to balance themselves back out again, so if you touch a conductor, like a metal doorknob or a tap, the charge will discharge itself and let out a zap.

If you walk around on a carpeted floor then grab a metal doorknob, you might get a quick shock or the sparking sound and feel you get when taking off a sweater during Harmattan.

What you need to be concerned about is static electricity. If you are pumping gas, and walk away from the pump, and say, get back into your car, you can build up static electricity, and when you touch the nozzle again, you can actually Ignite the fire.

I hate to break to you but it’s not your smartphones that cause cooking gas fires in the kitchen, or at the fuel station it’s static electricity from you, yes from your body.

So the best thing to do is to be careful alongside some tips below.

  • Know the type of footwear to wear
  • Be careful about fabrics
  • Wear anti-static wristbands
  • Rugs over carpet
  • Moisturize your skin especially when going out.
  • Hold your car key before exiting the car
